About Andrew

Andrew Romanoff is the Speaker of the Colorado House of Representatives. He is the first Democrat to win that post since 1975.

Representative Romanoff was elected to the House in 2000 and reelected in 2002, 2004 and 2006. He represents House District 6, covering east Denver and Glendale. Before his election to the speakership in 2005, he served as the House Minority Leader.

In 2005, Speaker Romanoff led a bipartisan majority of the state legislature to put the Colorado Economic Recovery Act (Referendum C) on the ballot � and then teamed with Governor Bill Owens to build the broadest coalition in state history to pass it. Among his other legislative achievements: the Sudan Divestment Act of 2007 and the Building Excellent Schools Today (BEST) Act of 2008, a billion-dollar plan to repair Colorado�s crumbling classrooms.

Andrew Romanoff, Colorado Speaker of the House Dozens of state and national organizations have recognized Speaker Romanoff�s leadership, including Governing magazine, which named him in 2008 as a �Public Official of the Year.� In 2006, he was honored as one of the most outstanding legislative leaders in America. The Council of State Governments, the National Conference of State Legislatures, and the State Legislative Leaders Foundation present the William M. Bulger Award to the �legislative leader who has worked to preserve and build public trust in the institution of the state legislature and whose career embodies the highest principles of leadership � integrity, compassion, vision and courage.� Speaker Romanoff is the award�s youngest recipient.

From 1993 to 1997, Romanoff worked, first as an associate and later as a senior associate, at the management consulting firm of Greenberg Baron Simon & Miller, Inc. He then joined the Office of State Planning and Budgeting, where he served as a policy advisor to Governor Roy Romer until 1999.

Romanoff has taught political science and public policy at the Community College of Aurora, Metropolitan State College of Denver, Red Rocks Community College, and the University of Colorado at Denver�s Graduate School of Public Affairs. He began teaching in Central America and speaks fluent Spanish.

Romanoff earned a bachelor�s degree with honors from Yale University (1989); a master�s degree in public policy from Harvard University�s John F. Kennedy School of Government (1993); and a juris doctorate from the University of Denver�s Sturm College of Law (2008). He is a member of the inaugural class of the Aspen-Rodel Fellowship in Public Leadership and the Democratic Leadership Council�s Fellows Program.
