Romanoff to Gardner: Protect Your Constituents—Not the NRA

“Enough is enough. We need to break the gun lobby’s death grip and save lives.”
U.S. Senate Candidate Andrew Romanoff

AURORA, CO—U.S. Senate candidate Andrew Romanoff called on Sen. Cory Gardner today to honor National Gun Violence Awareness Day by standing up to the gun lobby–and protecting his constituents instead.

Romanoff, who served as the speaker of the Colorado House of Representatives and as the president and CEO of Mental Health Colorado, released a 10-point plan to prevent gun violence.

“Over the last 25 years, I’ve met too many people all across Colorado who have lost loved ones to gun violence,” Romanoff said. “My family joined that grim list in 2015.

“Despite the daily drumbeat of gun violence, the Senate does nothing. The gun lobby bankrolls politicians and blocks reform.

“Senator Gardner has benefited from nearly $4 million in NRA spending. He shirks his duty while Americans die.

“Gun violence claims the lives of more than 100 Americans each day. Gun violence is now the second leading cause of death among children in the United States.

“Enough is enough. We need to break the gun lobby’s death grip and save lives.”

Romanoff’s Plan to Prevent Gun Violence

Romanoff has long worked to reduce gun violence in Colorado. In 1999 and 2000, he teamed up with gun-safety groups and then-House Minority Leader Ken Gordon to close the gun-show loophole.

Romanoff won election to four terms in the state legislature, including two terms as speaker of the House. He stood up to the gun lobby throughout his legislative career.

As the president and CEO of Mental Health Colorado, Romanoff fought for the passage of a red-flag bill to remove weapons from individuals deemed a significant danger to themselves or others. Gov. Polis signed that measure into law earlier this year.
